Where Uluwatu is and how to get there
Uluwatu is the area around the cliffs at the south end of the Bukit Peninsula. The land here is generally drier and more open than in the central highlands, with wide views over the ocean. The area lies south of the airport on the same peninsula, although the roads can be slow when they are busy.
Uluwatu's cliff-top temple is a famous landmark. The beaches below, among them Padang Padang, Bingin and Suluban, are reached by stairs, some of them steep. Many visitors ride scooters on the hilly roads, which calls for the right licence and insurance; a hired driver is the simple alternative.
What classes you are likely to meet
Sessions often happen on open decks or garden platforms, some near the cliff edge with a view of the water. Typical styles are vinyasa, hatha and yin, with gentle options for beginners. Studios are usually smaller than in Canggu and the mood is quieter.
Early and late classes are worth looking for, since the heat is lower then. Instruction is mostly in English; names of levels differ, so read the description.
How to choose a class
Plan around your day. After a morning of waves, a yin or restorative class is welcome; after a rest day, an active flow can wake you up. If you are new, pick a beginners' or all-levels class and arrive early to say hello to the teacher.
Think about the journey as well. A studio on a quiet back road may need a ride, so scout the route in daylight and plan how you will return, as the way home can be dark after an evening class. Our guides to the first class and to what to wear are a good start.
When to go, what to bring and manners
The year is warm, with a drier stretch roughly from April to October and a wetter one from November to March. The Bukit sun is strong and many spots are open to it, so wear a hat, use sun cream and carry water.
Long-tailed macaques live around the temple and some cliff paths. Zip your bag and keep glasses and phones out of sight. At the temple cover shoulders and knees and follow the signs. Step around offerings left on the ground.
